Homeless man with ‘hateful eyes’ bashes Olympic volleyball star on LA street

Olympic volleyball standout Kim Glass posted video of her badly injured face following a broad daylight assault from a man she describes as homeless, enraged and mentally ill.

The nearly 6-foot-3 silver medal winner said she was attacked Saturday after having lunch with a friend. According to Glass, she saw a seemingly homeless man behaving erratically and thought he was going to strike an automobile. Instead, Glass said, that man hurled a metal pipe in her direction that struck her in her head, causing her right eye to swell shut.

“He just like looked at me with some pretty hateful eyes,” she recalled while pointing out her injuries on social media. “Before I knew it, a big metal bolt hit me right here and here.”

Glass, who played for Team USA in Beijing in the 2008 Olympics, said she suffered “multiple” facial fractures from the attack.

“It happened so fast,” she said. “He just flung in from the street.”

According to Glass, she was paying attention to her surroundings, but was struck by the hurled object anyway.

“Be safe out there, keep your head on a swivel, off your phones,” she warned. “Theres a lot of mentally ill people on these streets right now.”

The Los Angeles native, who was raised in Pennsylvania and played volleyball at the University of Arizona, said witnesses in downtown LA restrained her attacker until law enforcement arrived. His identity has not been made public.

Glass has worked as a model since leaving Olympic competition, including posing for the cover of Sports Illustrated in 2011.
